EDIT: Jack point, was thinking something like that, thanks guys! I couldn’t find a 70’s 911 with one I could see in GIS.

And by this, I mean the square tube hitch receiver looking deal under the “E” on the pinchweld.

I think it’s a bit of a German over-engineering thing when it comes to jacks. Rather than having a jack that sits underneath the jacking point, there’s a rod that slots into the box-section and it jacks up on that.

Was the same on my E36.

Not a design I like actually. My E36 nearly came down on my head when it was jacked up on travel (probably that to blame really), when the jack rotated around in the box-section.

Unfortunately, most roadside jacks stowed in the car, are single-point jacks, and can easily topple if the car shifts even slightly. A bottle jack, a scissor jack, or almost any design compact enough to be stow-able on the car, usually only have a small footprint on the ground, and s single point of contact on the car.

It is VITALLY IMPORTANT to block the wheels on the other side of the car, so that the car can’t roll even an inch. The car moving is what leans a jack over past it’s own foot-print, and causes the car to fall off the jack. Only if the jack is a complete piece of un-safe trash does it actually collapse on itself when loaded within it’s rated limit.

At least a dowel-pin situation like Porsche/BMW doesn’t slip and slide on both ends, like a regular bottle-jack, or a scissor jack might, where both the bottom foot can slide on the ground, and the jack pad that lifts on the bottom of the car can slip, or can crush the body’s pinch weld under it’s own weight.

None of them are as stable as a wide-footprint jack-stand, or a rolling trolley jack, let alone an automotive lift.

Yeah I know all that now :) never got under a car that’s not at least on an axle stand with the jack still in place as a backup since.

The issue was that as the jack lifted the car, the jack leant over sideways ever so slightly (in line with the curve of the car as it rose). I must have put the jack in slightly off vertical so that put it close to its footprint, and the movement of the gravel beneath it did the rest.

Never again...
